Grown Up Beauty

Grown Up Beauty

Written by Katrina Garofalo

Some people say diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but a word from the wise says most women would choose cosmetics. The journey begins somewhere in our preteens when we first pick up that beloved mascara wand. A few experiments later, we see the light; the beautiful medium-coverage-dewy-finish light. Makeup becomes your ride or die, distracting you from bad skin days and celebrating with you on the good ones.

But like all good things, this relationship faces challenges. Our BFF can turn on us in the blink of one false lashed eye, and out goes our better judgement. Trends that aren’t actually in your best interest are suddenly surrounding you and you start to think that heavy contouring is the only way. How else are you supposed to get that chiseled cheekbone look that is totally natural and always seamlessly blended, right?

Charlotte Tilbury Magic Foundation
3Lab Healthy Glow Lip Balm

We fall victim to gimmicks. Whether it is a product or a trend, we’re all guilty of believing the hype of whatever the latest greatest thing is. It’s not our fault—not entirely. We’re just trying to find our way in the beauty world. There are bound to be ups and downs. The good news is that we eventually grow out of it. As we grow older and wiser, we start to see through the gimmicks. We learn what will help or hurt us, build a list of trusted go-to’s, and let the rest fly on by.

Sephora Collection Mud Mask
Tata Harper Rejuvenating Serum
La Mer Moisturizing Soft Cream

At least that’s the plan. Figuring out the ones that are worth it takes some time, and a lot of trial and error. For now, however, we can work on that list of go-to’s to the best of our current abilities. That means working off of what other people have found to be pretty reliable.

From a lip balm to a serum, our best friend comes in many forms.
