Springtime Blues

Springtime Blues

Written by Katrina Garofalo

Spring is beautiful. Flowers are in bloom, the days start getting longer, and the wind stops hurting your face. The sun makes a regular appearance which is a much needed break from the gloomy winter skies. Bedrooms and closets are beckoning for a ‘Spring Cleaning’. Excitement is in the air.

Although the temperature might not be dipping into quite so freezing lows any longer, that doesn’t always mean it’s time to retire your heavy coat until the next winter season rolls around. Nor does it mean that sandals, or legs for that matter, can be brought out of storage. It’s a beautiful time of year, yes. But a confusing time as well. During any other season you have a basic idea how you need to dress to deal with the elements. Springtime, however, is like the proverbial box of chocolates. One day calls for a light jacket at most, while the next demands a hat, scarf, and mittens. If you’re extra lucky you’ll get both in one day.

Dressing for this time of year can be particularly stressful. Stressful enough to throw someone into a rut that leads to a general dislike of this otherwise cheerful season. Weather, clothes, and mood are so closely linked that it’s easy to get lost while all three are clashing. Deciding what to wear is finding a balance between what is appropriate, what options you have, and what you actually want to wear.

There is no magic formula for reaching that balance, however there is some sage advice that we’ve all been told and will continue to be told until we inevitably start telling others: bring a sweater. Layering is the oldest trick in the book for good reason. It is practical, simple, and is often what makes a stylish person seem uniquely stylish.

The point is that whatever you put under the sweater should be something that you want to wear, regardless of what is going on outside your window. As long as you top it with something, or two somethings, that allow you to still be prepared for the unpredictable nature of Spring you should be free to wear whatever makes you feel the best on any given day. It doesn’t have to be a complicated dance to figure out what to wear.

Wear what you want! And you know, bring a sweater.
