Trends are a tricky business. Sometimes choosing which trends are for you in a sea of clothing can be difficult, especially when it comes to incorporating them into your already existing wardrobe. One thing popping up a lot more seems to be raw edged denim. Whether in the form of a button down, or a pair of jeans, the distressed look is basically unavoidable. Navigating the waters of distressed denim can sometimes prove to be a difficult feat. However, once finding the perfect level of distress to suit your needs, the trend really is for everyone. Here, we break down four levels to help guide you on the path to finding your match.

Level One: The Slightly Distressed

The first level of denim distress knows and appreciates the value of a dependable pair of raw edge jeans. While the term “shredded” may send a shiver down your spine, “raw edge” implies the tasteful and purposeful negligence of a finished hem. Paired with a clean button down, a blazer and some heeled sandals perhaps, this flattering and simple style is what you’re all about. Grab some classic skinnies, at Zara for example, and you are good to go.

Level Two: The Ol’ Reliable

The second level is reserved for those who want the stability of the classic denim cutoffs. This tried and true standard denim is one you know you will be able to update every year because, let’s face it, there will never be a summer where denim cut offs are NOT a thing. High waist, bleached, roll up hem, low rise…the options might actually be endless. While you might venture into a denim jacket here and there, it’s about as far as you’ll stray from your Levi’s shorts. And that’s okay!

Level Three: The Nouveau

Level three encompasses the new classics of distressed denim. T-shirts, dresses, jumpsuits, what have you. This style lends an interesting take on things you already know and love. It steps away from the expected, allowing you to create outfits with pieces like a worn in denim t-shirt, or frayed denim pencil skirt. You’re probably the most fashionably outgoing of your friends. You don’t believe in the ho-hum.

Level Four: The Distressed to Impress

Last on the levels of slightly destroyed denim goes above and beyond the expected pair of jeans. You are the Queen B of style, and you want to make sure everyone knows it. Regular old jeans, shmegular old jeans. You want something no one else will be able to pull off, if they’re even brave enough to try it. Being slightly intimidating is your specialty. An Isabel Marant Étoile denim coat is your match made in heaven.
