Here at The Strategy, we like to keep things light. Without a little fun and a little craziness, a block can be created that stops the enjoyment of what we do. The same applies to our views on style, our wardrobes, and those around us. A common misconception is that the fashion world is all work and no play, except for raging parties that finally allow us to let our hair down. Clearly, this is not true. And you don’t have to know people in the industry to know it. Just looking at what is created is testament enough.
We aren’t just talking about the fast food inspired Jeremy Scott, though it is a prime example of not taking fashion too seriously. We’re talking about hats with Cara Delevigne’s eyebrows, pyjamas as daywear, more pattern mixing than anyone dreamed, and those not entirely practical, but still completely necessary purchases. Like those shorts with the cats on them, or the heart shaped sunglasses you couldn’t live without.
It sort of all goes back to couture and the artistic nature of it all. Is it meant to be wearable? Of course not. Is it fun to look at? Hell yeah! And it is a huge source of inspiration. Which is reason enough to appreciate it. There are basically no rules for couture designers, meaning they can experiment with different elements more freely than those who have to worry about mass producing the pieces. Giambattista Valli had a fluffy purple coat and giant ombre gowns walking down his runway because he knows that they are not going to be distributed to the public. He knows that it’s for fun, for creation.
People forget that fashion is art. Yes, it’s a business and there are millions upon millions of dollars in corporations that produce fashion. But the core, the beginning, the foundation of good fashion, is the physical representation of emotions and expression of ideas. Sounds like good old fashion art if you ask us.
Our selection of clothing should be a continuation of this art form. Refuse the boring! Banish the dismal! At the very least, be more open to embracing the odd ones out in your closet rather than consistently giving them a pass. Don’t suppress your desire to be quirky. When you get dressed in the morning, wear whatever you want. Combine whatever pieces you think look good.
We know what you’re thinking. “Yeah, whatever…be yourself, blah blah blah.” But that is the essence of having fun with fashion: Not being so uptight about outside opinions on what you think is a pretty cool outfit. Be more fearless with your personal style. Have more fun with it.
We dare you.
