A perfect look for Summer 2014: white skinnies + a blue silk tank

Even our "Vogue On:" books get the trend

Joe Fresh skinnies

A Joe Fresh striped dress

Written by Katrina Garofalo

Everyone loves black and white. They’re classic. They’re timeless. They look good on anyone. They’re fail-proof. When in doubt: Black and White. You don’t mess with a good thing. And black and white are the best thing. So what’s with all the blue and white?  The new couple in town is taking over.

There’s blue and white EVERYTHING. From shoes and blazers to anything you could put in-between them. All shades bright to rich, there’s a hue to tickle any fancy.

We aren’t complaining, but we aren’t entirely on board. Yet.

We do love the classic nautical stripes and the occasional navy here or there, but full on blue? All the time? In various shades? It can be a big commitment. It’s one thing to wear blue jeans. It’s a whole other thing to start spreading the blue to other garments. For those of you who may be as apprehensive as us to jumping on the blue and white train, here’s some tips that might help.

TIP #1: Which blue is for you?

This is very important. Some people look really nice in cobalt, while it can make others look like a Smurf. If in doubt, whatever shade of denim you like the best could be good indicator of your blue BFF. Dark wash=navy/royals. Light wash=turquoise/grey-blues. EASY PEASY.

TIP #2: Know when to stop.

You want to look put together, not like the captain of a ship, the girl from Willy Wonka, or Britney and Justin in the matching denim outfits. Blue and white can turn nautical in two stripes, flat. Unless nautical is your goal, be weary while layering.

TIP #3: Navy is basically black.

Don’t love the idea of black and white being separated? Navy should help you out. It’s black for people who don’t want to wear black. Which is a good transition for people who don’t want to wear blue and white together.

Perhaps the most important thing to note is that blue and white is equally as classic and reliable as black and white. Though we don’t often see blue and white paired as obviously as we have recently, it is a common colour combination. It is one that takes a little practice since there are numerous blue options to choose from, but that’s part of the appeal. A different shade of blue can create a whole different feel. Nautical, business woman, girly girl, beach babe, world traveller. Shades of blue can be mixed with white to evoke whatever kind of impression you desire.

Hopefully, armed with this guidance, you can now safely venture into wearing blue and white together in less conventional forms than the ever loved t-shirt and jeans.
