Yeah, yeah…we know. We talk about denim a lot. Like, a lot, a lot. But there are so many good things to say that each one deserves its own write up. What can we say? We just really love denim. And patchwork denim is no exception (surprise, surprise).
Whether it is with leather, colourful patches, or more denim, patched denim is a surprisingly wearable trend. You can get away with wearing mended denim without looking like a misguided kindergarten teacher from the seventies. While there are an abundance of patched up denim available in boyfriend jean form, there are some more polished pieces as well. If jeans are to casual for your daily life, you can get a patchwork denim dress. Maybe a blazer to go with those trousers you love, instead of a regular old blazer.
Another reason to love the trend of patchwork denim is that it’s DIY-able. Got some jeans you wore to the max and busted a hole through? If you want to give them a new life that doesn’t include knees poking out, you can iron or sew in patches that you pick out yourself. Even if you have a denim jacket that has one too many rips. You can slap a patch under it, and just like that you’ve got yourself a brand new jacket.
We like the look best when paired with staple elements, like a plain white t-shirt with come boyfriend jeans, or black pumps with a patchy denim dress. If you happen to have a pair of jeans that have different coloured denim patches, you can go for a full on Canadian tuxedo. Because of the different coloured denim already in the jeans, you have free range when choosing a denim shirt. And since the trend can be perceived as more casual, it creates a great juxtaposition when paired with dressier items. Add some sleek jewelry and classic shoes, and you’ve got a simple and elegant outfit.
Sticking with a good pair of patched denim jeans, or branching into more tailored territory, is basically fool proof. It’s hard to mess something up when it is intended to look imperfect. Go into it without worry and you will be fine. It’s a trend you don’t have to try too hard to pull off, which is yet another perk. Dressed up, down, around the town, or at work, patchwork on your denim is an easy lazy day outfit cheat that can be transformed into a polished look.
And as long as you all promise that you won’t recreate the Spears/Timberlake denim fiasco of 2001, we’re all good.
