Been There

Been There

Written by The Strategy

I never thought I would say this, but the 80s are making a comeback.

It’s known amongst my friends that I’m not the biggest fan of the decade which brought not only puffy hair and big shoulders into the mainstream, but gave us things like leg warmers and fishnet accessories. I can’t look past the negatives I’ve witnessed through music videos, movies, and family pictures — much in the same way I imagine it was difficult to see past the hair on the lady in front of you on the subway back in the day.

Lots of people are into the 80s, but I am not one of them. Sorry, not sorry.

That being said, there is a trend on the rise and even I cannot deny it. No matter how much dislike I hold.

I guess you could chalk it up to the inevitability of most if not all styles coming back into play at some point, but considering the widespread sentiment that the 80s should stay in the 80s, it is still a bit surprising that some iconic elements from the decade are back.

Classic styles from the 80s are immortalized on film for everyone to absorb over and over. Which is where I believe a fair share of inspiration comes from for everyone from designers to shoppers looking for a new getup.

Dirty Dancing’s training montage scenes has low-key 80s influence with a variety of denim looks and body suits, as does Flashdance. Denim is a no-brainer, but the bodysuit has won over hearts this summer, creating a craze that’s still going on. Heathers was the preppy checkered suit for teenagers years before Clueless came to life. Michelle Pfeiffer gave life to the glamorous draped style of the slip dress in Scarface, which is mirrored throughout all of the 90s, and is a staple today.

History repeats itself, and in the past couple years it has been plain and simple to see, albeit a little out of order. We were bombarded by punchy 90s trends which glided into the easy 70s reign we see today, though the two seem to coexist really well. I thought I was in the clear, having avoided the 1980s twice. Once being born after them, and again by miraculously dodging them in the rewind from 90s to 70s style.

But apparently, much to my dismay, I’m not out of the woods yet.
