A Story About Socks

A Story About Socks

Written by Sara Fender

Now that working from home is the new norm, it seem not wearing shoes is also the new norm. This new development has made me seriously re-evaluate my sock collection.

As a fashion enthusiast who is not used to working from home, I can’t, in good conscience, just throw on a random assortment of business on top, sweats on bottom, and one of my many pairs of non-matching socks with holes in them that at least one of my toes always manages to escape from. I tried. I really did. But considering I’m the girl that needs her bra and underwear to match her outfit, even when no one is going to see it, this way of dressing only lasts a few minutes before my brain explodes from the mismatched hodgepodge of it all.

Before I can even sit down at my computer for my first Zoom meeting of the day, I am back in my closet, putting together a proper outfit. But, since I don’t wear shoes in the house (please leave them at the door, thank you. Yes, Carrie Bradshaw, I know they are part of your outfit, and I apologize) socks now have to be taken into consideration as part of the whole new look.

Monday is my favourite day to pull out all the stops. It’s the beginning of the week and full of possibilities. It feels like the perfect day for the Saint Laurent gold lamé bow-tie button-down shirt with the red Teagan tiered skirt from Buru, and last, but certainly not least, a pair of nude mesh socks adorned with Swarovski crystals from Etsy. It’s the perfect mix of high and low, and makes me feel as if I can conquer the world, even without proper footwear.

Speaking of footwear, I am very much into sneakers – more specifically, limited edition collaborations that are next to impossible to get unless you find them on GOAT or StockX for triple their original price. We all have our vices – this is mine. I used to lie in bed at night planning the perfect outfit to showcase my Nike Air Max 1 Parr’s or the Nike x Off-White Zoom Flys. Now, I plan outfits around the latest pair of socks that I had personalized with my cats face on them. And those socks, paired with white joggers and a black ribbed tank, are just the pick me up I need for Tuesday. And for Wednesday – I have more than one pair of personalized cat socks. Thursday, I’m back on my game. I have the coolest sequin socks from ASOS that I bought for a photo shoot and decided to keep. They are iridescent and fabulous. I pair them with denim cut-off shorts and a white button-up. If I need to run out of the house for anything, I just put on my white Stan Smiths, and the socks are still the star of the outfit.

Finally, I made it to Friday! Although, do Friday’s really mean anything anymore in the Covid-era? Regardless, my alarm clock is not going off on Saturday morning, and that is a reason to celebrate. And I choose to celebrate by substituting my socks for mauve cashmere legwarmers with my favourite worn-in black and white striped body suit from Urban Outfitters and a black American Apparel (remember them?) zip-up hoodie. Comfort wins the day. Except for those pesky Zoom meetings – I keep a black Helmut Lang blazer next to me for when the camera comes on and I need to be “business on top,” but knowing my legs and feet are wrapped in cashmere makes it bearable.

Once 5 o’clock hits, I’m logging off my computer, relocating to my couch to curl up with a good Netflix binge, still in my leg warmers. No shoes required. Only socks.
