As the seasons begin changing from autumn to winter, we’ve found ourselves thinking about what makes up our wardrobes. This time of year always calls for a once over of what we have and what we need, though this time around we’re also wondering exactly what kind of style we each fall into.
Looking through and gathering style inspiration is a habit that helps us all figure out how we want to dress. Where the helpfulness ends is where the confusion begins. It seems that there are two types of style. There is The Uniform and there is “Style”. To the average person, the difference may not be obvious. But we are not the average person.
The Uniform is just what it sounds like. It’s the Alexa Chung, the Kate Moss, the Dianne Keaton. The kind of style that knows where it looks best, what suits it, the exact style of t-shirt it loves best. The Uniform is reliable, trustworthy, and rarely if ever leads you astray. It can be varying in look but in sentiment they all fall into one idea.
“Style” is the kind of aesthetic that announces itself, shouts it’s presence from the rooftops. It’s the Leandra Medine, the Iris Apfel. This “Style” style is impossible to ignore simply because it is so bold and interesting that it becomes something otherworldly. It is exciting, unpredictable, and always on the hunt for something entirely new to put into action.
Most people would probably fall into the Uniform. If not for it’s ease, than for it’s self-assured confidence boost. If you know you look good, you feel good. It’s a tale as old as time. Why fall into trend traps and misadventure your way into style regrets? But then again, “Style” is a playground. It lets you really have fun with clothes. Let’s you become a different person in the switch of an outfit.
Debating between the two can feel like a never ending pros and cons list. But really, when you stop thinking about it and just go with what comes naturally, the label of it falls away. The Uniform is not boring, and “Style” is not obnoxious. In the end it doesn’t matter if you’re one or the other because both mean you have incredible style. Both have iconic and powerful members on their team. You’re in good company either way.
