With a lot of relationships being tested during lockdown, some of us (and yes, I’m talking about myself as well) now find ourselves single just in time to celebrate Valentine’s Day…alone…yay.
Don’t get me wrong, I’ve never been a fan of the day and the unnecessary pressures that it seems to bring, but it’s also been well over a decade since I have been unattached for the big day. This past year was a year of growth for me – with all the extra free time during lockdown I chose to immerse myself in therapy, meditation, journaling and rediscovering myself and my wants, likes, and needs.
This year, instead of giving a card and writing a love letter to my significant other, I will be writing a love letter to the most important person in my life – myself.
Even if it feels silly, I’m a firm believer in daily affirmations. When I am having an off-day and I don’t believe what I’m saying, the pure act of speaking the words out loud while looking myself in the eye in the mirror while wearing Saint Laurent pleated wide leg lambskin pants, a cotton cropped tank top from ASOS and a pair of crisp white Stan Smith’s is actually quite powerful. You can also be in your favourite sweats. No judgement. Just know that you are amazing, you are gorgeous, you are necessary, you are valuable, and most importantly, you are loved.
Dear Sara,
Happy Valentine’s Day! I just wanted to let you know that you are amazing. Even through the struggles and uncertainty, you have managed to handle yourself with dignity and grace. You have realized your potential and your worth and that is not easy. I love your sense of style and I hope you enjoy that new pair of love-themed Converse high tops. Nobody knows what to get you better than you (true story!) I am so grateful to have you in my life and to be your partner. I’ll be with you every step of the way. And remember: You are strong. You are intelligent. You are funny. You are important. You are beautiful. And frankly, you are killing it. Love yourself and others and always put your best foot forward.
Love,
Sara
