As always, fashion week not only brings clothing trends, but also beauty trends for the seasons to follow. On the Spring/Summer 2014 runways this year was a common look of ‘no-makeup’ makeup. Stemming from everyone who isn’t a model’s desire to emulate one, the bare faced look is pioneered by off duty models everywhere. In countless street style shots and behind the scenes clips of fashion shows each year, models are typically seen in little to no makeup pre show. With a rising interest in models that hasn’t been around since the days of the Nineties Supermodels, wanting to create a look that is inspired by fashion’s faces is only natural.
‘No-makeup’ may be called “no-makeup” but of course, there is actual makeup being used. Evolving over time from the popularization of the ever loved BB cream, going au naturel has been a long time in the making. The key is finding the right shades of concealer, highlighter, lip stain, or whatever other products you want to use to enhance your natural features. Besides that, ‘no-makeup’ makeup is a lazy girl’s dream come true. The look can take you from working all day, to out at night; from laying on the beach, to a fancy dinner; from running errands, to grabbing lunch. Get some long wearing products and you are set.
The practicality of ‘no-makeup’ is obvious. It’s relatively easy to achieve, low maintenance, looks effortless, and can be vamped up with a little eyeliner or lip colour if you feel like you need a little something extra. By channeling your inner Joan, Karlie, Cara, and all the other countless beautiful models that continuously wear minimal makeup looks, you open yourself up to an extra boost of confidence. If someone compliments you on your makeup, it will be more about you rather than your eyeshadow skills.
Though we may not all be brave enough to post a #nomakeup selfie first thing in the morning, and while we can’t exactly go shouting ***FLAWLESS lyrics after an hour of slapping a mask on our faces, with a little concealer here and little highlight there…people will be none the wiser. It’s about illusions after all. And besides, it’s summer, it’s hot, and you are bound to be sweaty mess at one time or another. Might as well use to your advantage, right? No one wants to be that girl at the pool with mascara running down her face, or the one scared to go further into the water than her shoulders.
So take a cue from the beauty leaders and try out the ‘no-makeup’ makeup. Put your feet up, soak in the sun, and let your face breathe.
