By now, I think we are all realizing that this winter is unbearable and we still have until March before it’s over. Not so great. Hence the reason why many of us are now frantically checking prices on Virgin and hoping to get the hell out of here!
For your warm weather resort destination, may we suggest a trip to Sri Lanka, the tiny island in the Indian Ocean. The country is often named on Conde Nast’s “Must See Destinations” and boasts some of the worlds best beaches, best tea, and yes, precious gems. Fun fact: Princess Diana’s engagement ring, and now The Duchess of Cambridge’s, features a Sri Lankan blue sapphire.
Hopefully you’ve been following along on Instagram (#TSTakesSriLanka) as we travelled to the beautiful island, but if not, no worries! Here is our suggestions for some of the best stops
Eat
Ministry of Crab, Old Dutch Hospital, Colombo 01 – Guest of a Guest, CNN and more have talked about how good this restaurant is. Not only is the decor fantastic, the food is to die for! The Chili Crab was our favourite, but we honestly would like to have sampled every dish on the menu.
Curry Leaf Garden Restaurant, Hilton Colombo, 2 Sir Chittampalam A Gardiner Mawatha, Colombo 1 – Located in the garden of the Hilton Colombo, this restaurant offers the perfect variety of traditional Sri Lankan dishes. A must stop to indulge in local flavour!
Sleep
Jetwing Beach, Ethukale, Porutota Road, Negombo – With about 3 pools and beach access, this hotel is all about relaxing. With multiple restaurants, and the best chocolate milkshakes and devilled beef, you really will have no reason to leave.
Shop
Paradise Road, 213 Dharmapala Mwa, Colombo 7 – Visiting this store made me wish I thought ahead and organized for a crate to ship back to Toronto. Everything from spa essentials to cutlery and art work can be purchased at Paradise Road. Everything has an Asian influence, but done so in a contemporary way.
Barefoot, 706 Galle Road, Colombo 3. – This store has more than 1 location, but the one we’ve listed is their flagship, with the most to offer. You would be crazy to leave Sri Lanka without getting your hands on some iconic Barbara Sansoni fabric that you will no doubt see in every restaurant and hotel along the way.
Safe travels!
