WMCFW In Review

Entering the tents

All about the Canadian Collections

A sample of a front row at WMCFW

Written by The Strategy

I’ve never been one for camping, but if you’re talking about spending a few days in and around the infamous white tent of WMCFW, now that’s one I can get under. And you can bet your bottoms we did. Last week marked the end of WMCFW ‘15, where local Canadian designers, media, press, fashion photographers, and general public united on the fashion campgrounds of David Pecaut Square in Toronto. On the agenda? All things fashion; Canadian fashion, that is.

For those that may have missed the shows, let us reassure you that better days (and fashions) are coming. Day one kicked off with Toronto-based designer, Mikhael Kale and his 60’s inspired disco ensembles. Whether it be the shift dress, the orange and belted frocks, or the leather cut-out dresses, the “dress” will be with us in the long run as a fall/winter wardrobe staple. Thank you Mr. Mikhael Kale.

Up next, Hayley Elsaesser reminded us just how fun fashion really is with “Midnight Cowboy,” a fashion flock of in-your-face neons and colourful paint-splattered backpacks for everyone. Not Hayley’s first collection debut, we know, but it certainly gave us a first impression that was fresh, vibrant, and playful.

Over at Mackage, cool and earthy tones collided to present a collection that had us excited about layering and winter dressing. And who could forget the over-tweeted Mackage flared snow pants? Is there anything that makes us long for winter more?

On the fifth and final day, Jaan Choxi debuted his very first all Canadian collection which involved a line up of dapper tailored suits, skinny ties, and the occasional metallic aviator. If there’s one thing Choxi did, it was capturing the youthful energy Toronto has to offer all in the form of a well-tailored suit. Meanwhile, fellow designer, Stephan Caras had us falling in love with a RUBI collection of striking red ensembles from flowy jumpsuits, romantic halters, to thigh high slits. On another romantic note, Mikael D closed his “Mystical China” collection with a dreamy white textured ball gown successfully channeling the ‘Snow White’ princess in all of us.

Of course, there was plenty more where these came from as these were just some of the highlights from last week’s white-tent festivities. And though we’re putting these trends on the back burner for now, WMCFW once again reassured us that some of the best days, or in this case fashions, have yet to come.

Until then, I think it’s time we catch up on some beauty sleep.
