Unruly hair is the bane of the summer season for many. Countless lotions and potions promise to transform, protect, repel, and revamp frizzy hair into luxurious frizz-free locks, but sadly don’t hold up their end of the bargain. Unfortunately, that means not only disappointment in the latest and greatest product you’ve tried our hand at, but also ending up with exactly what you were trying to avoid: frizzy, complicated hair.
I’m the kind of person that has inconsistently frizzy hair. Most days it totally co-operates and we get along great. But every so often it rebels into moody, unpredictable territory.
I’m also the kind of person that is all for putting little-to-no effort into actually doing my hair. As such, I’ve researched my way into finding out how to avoid/how to deal with spontaneous acts of humidity with the least effort possible. Think of it less as fighting humidity, and more as dealing with it. If you’re more “Monica Geller in Barbados” than you’d like to be, these may work for you!
Tip #1: Rinse your hair with cool water.
Before you get out of the shower, turn the water to cool and rinse your hair. There’s some science behind it that uses a bunch of technical terms, but long story short, the cool water seals the strands of hair in a similar way that it closes pores on your skin. I think. Something about cold water makes hair more shiny and less likely to frizz, which is all I need to know.
Tip #2: Always keep a hair elastic and/or bobby pins on you.
Since my hair likes to react to humidity at random, having a hair elastic and some pins is a must for me. If your can’t beat the frizz, tie the frizz back. Braids are a personal favourite because they hide frizz and they look like they took a lot more effort than they did. Though buns, half-up, side pin, what have you…all good choices.
Tip #3: Try not to use so much product.
The normal reaction to combatting frizzy hair is to load on product after product. However, as mentioned above, this is less about fighting and more about working it through. Some products help, some products hurt. It’s up to you to find what works on your hair. There is no magic fix-all that will work on everyone.
And last but not least, (AKA: The Golden Rule)
Tip #4: Avoid heat damage at all costs.
That means no flatiron, no blowdryer, no curling wands, nothing without first using a heat protector. Don’t expect to straighten the frizz out of your hair entirely. It is a temporary fix that humidity will chuckle at and after cramped arms and stiff neck, the frizz will be back. The last thing you want to do is damage your hair while it’s vulnerable.
