“Beauty is pain” is a phrase that can regrettably be true sometimes. In the case of fashion, the pain usually takes the form of high heels. However, if there were a more accurate real life representation of “Fashion is pain,” it would be the Bardot top.
Easy-going Bardot’s have made a huge return this summer, popping up in every shape and form imaginable. And while we are utterly in love with the off-the-shoulder beauties, we can’t ignore the infuriating symptom that accompanies them. What symptom, you ask? Oh, just the day-long struggle of keeping the off-the-shoulder sleeves off of your shoulders.
Nicknamed after the one and only Brigitte Bardot, one our all time favourite summer muses, the Bardot top embodies the style and ease of being that Brigitte herself is known for. Except, like any true diva, the Bardot top took on a little extra trait of sometimes being a pain.
Any movement that goes above the elbow results in a dreaded sleeve shift. Drinking that grande Americano with soy in the morning will come with a shot of sleeve adjusting, no substitutions. Need to reapply some lipstick? You’ll also need to re-fix your Bardot top. Unlike certain risqué wardrobe pieces that can be sealed into place with some body tape, Bardot sleeves go where they please.
And though many may see this catch a reason to steer clear of tops who’s sleeves don’t belong on a shoulder, we along with other style adventurers accept the challenge and simply deal with it. Because there are few things that can come between a woman and her desire to wear a trendy top. Shop our essential Bardot’s below, which run the gamut from sleek to boho. Like we said, there’s a Bardot for everyone.
If Brigitte can do it, so can we.
