It’s Cinco de Mayo, y’all.
A day that’s got its roots planted in a memorial of underdog victory and has grown into an international celebration of Mexican culture. We can all use this as a day to remind others why coming together in support and respect of one another’s cultures is a beautiful and fun thing to do. You get good food with good company — a fiesta through and through.
The only thing missing from the party is drinks! Lucky for you, we’ve lined up five easy-to-make tequila cocktails that will impress your guests.
The Paloma
1 shot tequila
1/2 cup fresh grapefruit juice
1/2 tsp sugar
1/2 lime
splash of rosewater (optional)
Stir the sugar into the grapefruit juice until dissolved. Mix juice, tequila, sugar, and the juice of half a lime in a shaker with ice, and pour into a chilled glass. For a little extra something add a splash of rosewater to the top.
Margherita Shots
1 shot triple sec
2 shots tequila
1 lime
1/2 lemon
Himalayan salt
Prep your shot glasses with a salt rim. (We chose Himalayan salt because it’s just simply better than other salt and because #millennial.) In a shaker with ice, combine triple sec, tequila, and the juice of one lime and half a lemon. Makes 3-4 shots.
Strawberry Spice
1 1/2 shots jalapeño infused tequila
3-4 ripe strawberries
1/2 cup coconut water
To make the jalapeño infused tequila: Add 1 chopped jalapeño to a small container or jar and cover with tequila. Allow to sit for a day or so in the fridge. The longer it chills, the stronger the flavour will be.
In a shaker, muddle the strawberries with a wooden spoon. Add jalapeño infused tequila and the coconut water, stirring until mixed. Strain into a glass with ice.
Ginger Zing
1 1/2 shots ginger infused tequila
1/2 cup orange juice
squeeze of lemon
To make the ginger infused tequila: Using the same method as the jalapeño tequila, add about 1 inch of peeled and chipped fresh ginger to a jar and cover with tequila. Allow to chill in the fridge for at least one day.
Stir ginger tequila into a glass of cold orange juice and top with a squeeze of lemon juice. For extra pep in your step, muddle some of the tequila soaked ginger and add the liquid to the orange juice.
Cucumber Coconut Water
5-6 cucumber slices
1 1/2 shots tequila
1/2 cup coconut water
In a shaker, muddle the cumber slices until well crushed. Stir in coconut water and tequila. Strain over a tall glass filled with ice. Garnish with more cucumber slices.
¡Salud!
