Q&A

How do you start your day off?

A massive slice of avocado toast (with all the best toppings!) on homemade bread. I pair that with a huge Nespresso coffee with Oatly oat milk. I then sit down to schedule all of my social media posts/activities so they can be running while I attend to my full-time job. My employees work on the East Coast, so I typically wake up to a slew of e-mails that I need to dive right into.

What’s going on in the background when you are getting ready?

Always, always, always, music! It is my lifeline. The type of music heavily depends on where I’m going and of course, what my mood is. For example, if I’m headed to boxing, I’ll crank my Crunk Spotify playlist, which is riddled with mash-ups and hip hop. If I’m heading out on a date with my husband, I usually play the song that’s been an ear worm that week, so we can chat about it on the drive in. I love so many different style of music (truly), that you never know what I’ll blast around the house!

You never leave home without…

Lip balm and chewing gum! I get anxiety if I don’t have lip balm handy, as I hate having chapped lips. I typically have about 10 different lip balms handy at any time while home. It’s also my default lip product, as I rarely wear tints/lipstick/gloss, etc. I find that lip balm gets me the most compliments on my lips and all it’s doing is enhancing my natural colour.

What are your closet essentials?

I’ve been leaning more towards staple pieces that are versatile, and when combined with contrasting pieces, make a completely new outfit. So, pieces that layer well like jumpers, dresses, jeans, etc. are the default go-to’s in my closet.

What is your biggest fashion regret?

Anything trendy. The desire to wear it fades once the trend passes and you’ve just spent money on trying to fit in. Instead, I’m now looking for pieces that are flattering, classic, ME, and ultimately that I can see myself wearing for years to come, regardless of the fashion trends happening.

You always splurge on, and you always save on…

Splurge: Shoes or a fancy dress that I can wear to different events like weddings or work parties. Lately, I’ve also been investing in better jewelry. I tend to wear quality jewelry pieces much more often than costume or cheaply made pieces.

Save: Basics. I go through t-shirts far too quickly to justify spending a fortune on them. They’re just something that I seem to get the most wear out of and need a refresh in my wardrobe every year.

What is one piece of clothing you wish you could steal from your 16 year old self?

I would have said this pair of GAP jeans that I LIVED in, but I actually still own them! They’re that pair of jeans that I aspire to be able to fit into whenever I’m looking to lose weight and get more fit. They just made my bum look so divine and fit me like an absolute glove. Although, it helps that doing ballet 6 times a week gave me a pretty great bum to begin with, so maybe I’ll steal the bum while I’m at it!

What inspires your style most?

Because I love so many different styles, I couldn’t point out one person, era, or culture. However, I’m learning that if you feel confident in your clothes, that is far more attractive and flattering than anything you could grab on a rack. I love a unique, funky, rocker look. But then again, I love to feel incredibly feminine in a flowy dress. My wardrobe doesn’t have any uniformity to it because I cannot make my mind up about one particular style, and ultimately, just dress for my mood. So long as I feel confident and happy, then I’ll take inspiration from others who own their looks – regardless of style!

Your #1 style tip is…

Stop and think “Do I really need this? Is this just trendy? Do I already own something similar that I can get away with?” If the answer is ‘no’, then make sure it’s something that you’ll wear AT LEAST 30 times or more. This helps your budget, the planet, and allows you to feel confident in your purchases and yourself.
