Kristen Marie Nichols

Bio

If you are an avid reader of Who What Wear (and if you’re not…get on that, tout de suite), you have definitely seen the likes of Kristen Marie Nichols. As the websites’ Managing Editor, her kick-ass style can be seen all over its DNA, while Kristen herself has been the star of stories like “I Gave Myself an Italian-Style Makeover” and “I’ll Never Wear These Shoes Again After Living in Paris.” Her own Instagram page is chock-full of fashion inspiration and dreamy locations. Before joining Who What Wear, she learned the tricks of the trade at Rodarte and Allure. So, after copious amounts of scrolling through Kristen’s Who What Wear and Instagram content, we just had to know more.

Q&A

How do you start your day off?

Usually, I start out with a workout in the morning. I’ll just hop over to the gym or do a walk around the neighborhood. I’m always catching up on e-mails and Instagram.

What’s going on in the background when you are getting ready?

I recently got a vintage record player that was my dad’s in the 60s and 70s. It was a gift he gave me last fall, along with some of his albums. I’ll usually put on an album and it sets the mood for the morning.

You never leave home without…

My cell phone – which is an essential for everything from work to catching up with family and friends.

What are your closet essentials?

I typically like to build a wardrobe where I have the building blocks for what I need to wear day-to-day. I invest a lot in really great jeans, blazers, great bags and shoes. Those are my building blocks. Then I’ll add in more trend forward pieces. Having all the essentials to built out your wardrobe makes getting ready everyday the easiest.

What is your biggest fashion regret?

I really don’t have many fashion regrets, but one of the lessons I learned was that all trends will return. I remember having this little Louis Vuitton bag in high school that I ended up selling. I really regret it now, because now the 90s and 2000s trends are back. If it’s a designer piece or an investment item, it’s worth holding on to.

You always splurge on, and you always save on…

I always splurge on shoes and bags. Having nice shoes and bags elevates your outfits. I don’t spend a lot of money on trendy pieces, because they don’t have a long shelf life.

What is one piece of clothing you wish you could steal from your 16 year old self?

I wish I could steal that Louis Vuitton bag that I got rid of!

What inspires your style most?

I feel like I draw from a lot of places for inspiration. I am always looking back in time, when it comes to style. Whether it’s fashion from the 90s or Old Hollywood – I think my style is a blend of classic meets modern style. I also like to throw in a little bit of glam at certain points.

You’re Number 1 style tip is…

Find pieces that make you feel confident. One thing I tried to do in the past was make a trend or silhouette work for me that wasn’t right for me.
