As someone who tries to live as sustainably as possible, I’m far from perfect. It has taken me years to reach a point of sustainability that brings me content, and even now, I’m always on the hunt for ways to improve! Below are some of the easiest switches you can make for your next purchases to bring a little more thoughtfulness into your life. After all, it really isn’t hard living more consciously – sometimes, you just need some inspiration and a few good ideas to start your collection.
In Your Closet
The Basic Tee: Start simple. We tend to replace our white tees most frequently (darn pit stains!) so, the next time you’re on the hunt for a replacement to wear with those perfect, high-waisted jeans, consider shopping from any of these brands who have a generous selection choose from – Alternative Apparel (all their basics are great), Pact, Amour Vert (oui! oui!), and Everlane.
Fitness Attire: Not ready to hibernate just yet, with this cooling weather? Good! Stay active, do it in style and keep sustainability top of mind whilst you burn of alllll the carbs. These are some of my favourite activewear brands, where you can get just the cutest pieces: Girlfriend Collection (they have the cutest colours!), prAna, Reve-En-Vert and Beyond Yoga (did someone say velvet???).
Stripping it back: Bye bye Victoria’s Secret sales bin undies! Let’s upgrade your knickers to something you’ll love so much more (your vag and boobs will thank you too!) Here are my favourite products:
Shoes! OMG! Shoes! Let’s get some shoes…and let’s make them ethical. I found shoes to be one to be one of the hardest areas to make the sustainable swap. I didn’t want to rely on the typical ‘granola’ approach, but thankfully, I’m seeing more and more (mainstream!) brands incorporating sustainability and veganism into their lines. Here are some I’ve been wildly impressed with: Stella McCartney x Adidas Stan Smith (what a brilliant collab!), Veja, Collection & Co (hello winter boots!):
For even more sustainable fashion alternatives, I’ve got a full list here.
On Your Top Shelf
Sustainable Skincare: Besides opting for plant-based, cruelty-free and sustainable made skincare products themselves, I also aim to shop with brands who apply this sustainability to their packaging as well. If you can strive to buy glass (vs. plastic) where possible, you’re doing your part that much more for the planet! Here are a few favourites that are always on my bathroom shelves:
Make-up: The clean beauty movement is really picking up speed, which means there are so many wonderful and effective brands to choose from now. As I start to clear through my overly cluttered make-up drawer, I’m replacing older products with new, clean, and sustainable make-up brands. My favourites include RMS Beauty, ILIA Beauty, Tarte Cosmetics, and bareMinerals.
Hopefully, you’ll find this list helpful as you start to incorporate more sustainable pieces into your life. With the holidays approaching, and your Christmas wish lists being carefully planned, consider asking your loved ones to help chip away at some of these sustainable items, and I promise you won’t be disappointed when you open up that ‘surprise’ present.
