Can we please talk about Valentino Couture SS22?

In a world of statement making balaclava’s, extreme low-riding bottoms, and almost comically chunky footwear, the beauty of fashion can often be lost. We are almost so wrapped up in creating the most shock-inducing moment, that we forget the beauty of simplicity, and often the beauty of the human form.

Working in the fashion industry, we are so used to seeing the same models with thin frames modelling extravagant creations season after season. It’s unfortunately very rare to see women of not only every size, but age and background strut down a runway.

Saying this, Valentino Couture’s Spring/Summer 2022 show was a much needed breath of fresh air. The show, “Anatomy of Couture” inspired us and reminded us why we love fashion and this industry so damn much.

Embracing different body sizes and ages, Creative Director Pierpaolo Piccioli presented minimalist black and white dresses with stunning silhouettes on models of every age, size and background with slicked-back low buns and dramatic lashes. Bolder looks, like a neon pink dress or a monochromatic bright purple deep-v dress and jacket with immaculate draping were paired with simple yet elegant peep-toe mules. All 64 looks left us breathless and smiling at the beauty that was presented.

One of our favourite elements of the show, a smaller detail that inspired us, was the use of thigh high stockings. The peek of the thick opaque band around the upper thigh added a sultry elegance to one high-slit, one shouldered look, while it added a more risqué touch to another look of a blazer and orange mini dress. The simple, understated accessory has been around forever, but after seeing it on the Valentino Couture SS22 runway, we’re convinced: it’s the accessory of the season.

And with Valentine’s Day just around the corner, it may be time to stock up.
