What's The Deal with Body Oils?

What's The Deal with Body Oils?

Written by The Strategy

Before I started The Strategy, my beauty routine was horrendous at best. It wasn’t until an intern looked at me in horror when I admitted to using body lotion in leu of face cream, that I even considered buying some – yeah, I know 🙄. But after a couple years of learning, I’ve realized how important a beauty routine is. My latest discovery is body oils. Everyone from Vogue to Goop is talking about the benefit of body oils, so it must be a thing! But, let’s start simple: What’s the deal with body oils?

So, What Is It?

Body oils are just another beauty discovery we can attribute to the ancient Greeks, and it’s only now that our ‘advanced’ generations are re-discovering them. Body lotion basically consists of some type of oil extract (rose-hip, aloe, coconut, etc) and water, all held together with emulsifiers (agents that holds the two together). Body oils are, simply put, the oils that lotions extract, without all the other nonsense. Oils from natural ingredients resemble the natural oils in our skin, so they are easily absorbed.

What’s the Best Way to Apply?

Ever leave a massage and think your skin feels so moisturized? That’s because for the past 60-90 minutes, someone has taken the time to massage oils into your skin. While you may not feel exactly the same applying body oil at home, I suggest taking the time to really massage the oil into your limbs. Do this after a shower when your skin is slightly damp so the oils can be properly absorbed. While the oils do sink in pretty fast, it’s best to leave a minute or two for drying time. I use this time to comb out and style my hair. Also, it’s worth a note that when it comes to body oils, a little goes a long way. While exact amounts vary on body type, start with a little and work your way up if necessary.

And the Benefits Are?

Since incorporating body oils into my beauty routine, my skin has been transformed. I’ve been using Beautycounter’s body oil in Citrus Rosemary and it has made my skin feel super moisturized and have a slight glow. Perfect for summer and even better during the winter months. Body oils tend to give the skin an extra hit of moisture that body lotions tend to lack, and leave the skin feeling firm and healthy. My skin feel hydrated and fresh. An added bonus is that the fresh scent many body oils give off act as a perfect base for your perfume.
