Hair Accessories

The simplest way to distract from an otherwise bad hair day

A bejewelled headband

If you're not quite ready for full-on Maison Michele lace bunny ears

Written by The Strategy

One of the best things about being a girl is discovering the world of hair accessories. Sure, moms force you to wear headbands and such from the time you’re born until you’re about five. But when you finally get to make hair decisions on your own behalf it’s like a whole new world. Butterfly clips, bows, and everyones favourite, scrunchies, were the usual go-to’s, and for good reason. There was no bad hair day that a clip and scrunchy couldn’t solve.

Whether you had pin straight or wildly curly hair, there was a choice for you in the hair accessory realm. Nowadays, even though the scrunchy came back somehow, clips, ties, and bands covered in everything including flowers, diamonds, feathers, beads, even bunny ears, are all the rage. And they aren’t just for your average fashion rebel anymore. Thanks to Dolce & Gabbana’s headband bouquets, flowers in your hair has never looked more elegant. Valentino, Zac Posen and Anna Sui caught on as well, all including floral hair decor in their Spring/Summer ’14 shows.

They come complete with gold coin accents, chains, leaves, the whole shebang. The flower trend has developed into decorative headpieces, bands inspired by 20s glamour girls, ones that double as jewelry. You can have hair accessories with metal flowers and gemstones, if the lifelike kind is too much for you. There is some serious artistry that goes into these beautiful little accessories, and we commend it!

Traditionally, elaborate head pieces are reserved for special events like weddings or festivals (or equestrian events, if you’re talking elaborate hats). However, with the details that designers are putting into them, and the variety that they allow you to have, there are no limits for where and when fancy hair accessories can be worn.

Imagine the possibilities!

Having a rough hair day? Braid it and weave in a few blooms. Does that bun look too plain for you today? Toss on some silver and gold hair clips. Having a hair crisis before an event? Twist some gemstone embellished bands into that hair do and call it a day. If you want florals and are feeling brave, you could spring for real flowers, though you might end up attracting some insect friends. Best to stay indoors if you go for that.

Since it’s summer, and with every new season it’s irresistible to try the new thing, this is definitely a thing that should be tried. Whether you let your hair down or twist it up, try wearing a crown of flowers fit for the Queen of Bohemians or a headpiece that would fit right in at a Gatsby party. The rule is: There are no rules.
