Speaking both from a professional and personal level, knitwear has taken over my life in the best way possible.
Slowly over the past two or three years, the amount of knit sweaters that have made their way into my closet is staggering. It started with one short sleeve oversize knit in a creamy white, then a second, this time a brown cable knit jumper. Now at easily over ten knit sweaters, all in various colours and styles, I think it is safe to say I am obsessed with knitwear. It has quite literally gotten to the point where I have to stop myself, sometimes unsuccessfully, from purchasing more knits because I just don’t have the space to keep them.
For a while, it was hard to find knitwear in the abundance that we see it in today. It has a knack for fading in and out of popularity, lingering in small ways- but nothing like the knitwear packed styles of today. You can hardly walk into a store, browse a website, or see anyone on the street without encountering a knit in some way. Knit sweaters, pants, dresses, jewelry, etc.
It’s difficult to pinpoint why everyone loves knitwear so much, but I’m sure it has to do with the versatility it allows. You can have a thick knit turtleneck sweater that’s warm enough to insulate you on even the coldest winter days, and you can have a barely there, crochet knit bikini for days in paradise. For those who are bold and daring, and those who favour being conservative. From the classic Chanel knit suit, to the modern classic Missoni knit dresses. There really is knitwear for any and everyone.
While I continue to purchase, usually impulsively, knitwear that catches my eye, I hope that it does stick around this time. With brands, like Missoni, built on luxury knitwear, it’s unimaginable to picture a fashion scene without the warm and cozy that we’ve come to love so much.
However, regardless of its future, those of us who are knitwear devotees will continue to keep a special place in our hearts for all that is knit.
