While this is one of the most beautiful times of year, it also happens to be the most confusing. You wake up to the birds singing, sun streaming on your face, but when you step out the door, you realize there is a layer of frost on the ground and it is actually still too cold to wear your sleeveless blouse. Ahh Spring, the season of transitional dressing.

The mornings may start off cold, but end mildly warm, and your evenings dip down again to freezing temperatures. You never know what the day is going to throw at you. Hence, why we recommend you look into transitional pieces. Pieces that are classic enough to be worn for a few early springs, and versatile enough that you can wear them come fall, winter, spring or summer.

First up: A basic long sleeve tee. We opted for a striped version, to add a little more detail, but solids work just as well. It works well under knits and jackets,  and with shorts, jeans and skirts.

Throw on top of that a classic A-Line Duster coat. It’s light enough to carry around with you during the day, and is dressy enough for a day-to-night option.

You can never go wrong with a silk scarf. Like ever. If the morning is cool, wrap it around your neck. If you are getting suffocated by the afternoon, tie it around your purse handles, or your wrists. Throw it around your shoulders to add a little extra to your basic tee. Seriously. You can never go wrong silk scarf.

Now, let’s talk bottoms. Jeans, are obviously a go-to, but I’m sure by spring, you are dying to show some leg. Culottes are great, skirts are beautiful, but a cropped trouser is a perfect transitional alternative. Paired with an ankle boot, you still get the warmth  of a trouser, and show that subtle hint of skin.

The last item we suggest you have in your transitional arsenal: An oxford shirt. These classic shirts are made for layering, and look just as great on their own. If you invest in a  well-made option, we know you’ll get years of use out of it.
