With the flood of Seventies trends that are bombarding us this summer season, there is one that usually makes it’s way around regardless of the changing trends. A garment that screams of warm weather, and bohemian inclinations. What is this item that is synonymous with summer?
The peasant top.
Everyone has a peasant top buried somewhere in their closet and it usually makes an appearance once or twice before going back into hiding. There isn’t anything technically wrong with the shirt, but for some reason or another it doesn’t get much time out. Maybe it’s our view of the options a peasant top can be paired with, seeing it with jeans or shorts and not much else. Or maybe it’s become a glorified t-shirt. Whatever the reason, peasant tops are a grey area for many.
We think it is high time that peasant tops were able to shine like the stars they are. Contrary to the vision stuck in our minds, peasant tops are not just for boyfriend jeans and cut-offs. They can easily be paired up with leather pants for a less obvious boho look. You could take a page from the Alexa Chung book of style by throwing some dungarees over your peasant top. Maybe match it with a high waisted skirt for a balance of casual but still work appropriate.
Either way, peasant tops are far more exciting than a plain t-shirt with an equal amount of ease. They don’t have to be reserved for old-timey nostalgia fans or hippies. Gone are the days when peasant tops were a fashion don’t. Designers including Chloé, Isabel Marant, and Alberta Ferretti have added peasant tops to their roster of S/S15 wear, which pretty much solidifies it as a must have.
Loose fit? Must have. Embroidery? Must have. Seventies inspired? Must have.
Need I go on?
