There are many misconceptions about the fashion industry, not the least of which is the thought that we’re all a bunch of melodramatic, egotistical snobs. If you work in the industry, people assume you either are or work for someone who is a carbon copy of our favourite fictional magazine editor brought to life by Meryl Streep. And while we do genuinely love and appreciate The Devil Wears Prada in all it’s exaggerated, wonderful glory…surprisingly, that’s not real life!
HOWEVER- like all people- sometimes minds clash, words are exchanged, and before we know it there’s a full-blown feud in our midst. And so, today, which happens to be national ‘Kiss & Make Up Day,’ we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to remember some infamous fashion feuds and relish a little bit in the drama that (occasionally) takes the fashion industry by storm.
Schiaparelli vs Chanel
Perhaps the most infamous of them all, the long-standing feud between the two icons had quite the reign. Both competitive, driven women in the same industry, they were natural rivals. The peak incident was when Chanel persuaded Schiaparelli into a dance at a ball and then proceeded to dance her into an open flame. Reportedly. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer, right?
Roitfeld vs Alt
Less on the radar for those who aren’t fashion savvy, but nonetheless impactful. After Roitfeld was dismissed from Vogue Paris and Alt stepped right into her shoes as editor, bad blood began to flow. They cut communication and speaking altogether, Carine starting her own magazine and Emmanuelle made herself at home at Vogue.
Horyn vs Everyone
Okay, so maybe not everyone. Only Hedi Slimane, Giorgio Armani, Lady Gaga, and Oscar de la Renta. Although all the feuds have been separate occurrences, they all stem from harsh criticisms on Cathy Horyn’s part about each party. From style to business, it was all on the chopping block. Its been said that Horyn and de la Renta mended their gripe, and we’re hoping the same can be done for all involved.
Campbell vs Banks
Talk about infamous! The two most famous supermodels in their prime and still to this day, Tyra and Naomi were pitted against each other by the press, had numerous altercations, and intertwined careers that only added to the fire. Fourteen years after the start of the rivalry, the two met on Tyra’s talkshow to work things out, resulting in this fantastic episode. Though slightly cringey, it ends in laughter and a catwalk.
Like I said, not everyone is in a fighting mood. But let the feuds speak on behalf of the fashion industry’s obvious love and dedication to their craft and personal convictions.
