Opening Ceremony

Trends tend to work in cycles of rebellion. You can always tell when a new trend is about to pop up by the prevalence of an older one. The constant exposure to one trend makes everyone flock to whatever the opposite is.

Which has turned out to be good news looking ahead to S/S 2016.

The silhouette of tied up, laced together, body-barring ensembles wasn’t the frontrunner this time around. For the first time in a while, there were looks strutting down the runway that looked like a dream to wear. Loose trousers, baggy knits, oversize everything, and an overall theme of undone, effortless style was a standout.

I don’t know about you, but to me that all sounds great. Comfortable clothes are always welcome, especially when they are sartorially acceptable.

Loose, draped layers were the focal point of a fair share of fashion month shows.

Acne Studios put oversize blazers and waistcoats in bold colours to good use, lending itself perfectly to the modern 80s vibe of the show. Vogue Runway guesses that the collection was inspired by the iconic Grace Jones, a logical fit for the heavily music-influenced brand.

Adam Lippes’ homey collection of luxe pleated fabrics and comfy silhouettes are the best version of loungewear to wear out that we’ve seen. He crafted the perfect polished and easy going aesthetic. Opening Ceremony following suit, throwing together cropped trousers with tunics and dresses. The dance-inspired line used the combination of creamy colours and silk to add to the dreaminess of the individual pieces.

For once, everything looked comfortable. Which if you follow fashion closely enough, you know is rare.

We hardly think that fashion is comfortable, especially when the phrase “Beauty is pain” has become a regular cliché. But if these collections prove anything it’s that comfort is just as beautiful.
