Nylon Debate

Nylon Debate

Written by The Strategy

When it comes down to it, in the dead of winter we all sacrifice style for comfort and practicality. It’s too cold to worry about looking our best— we’re worrying about survival not style. Rarely do those ideas come together as one, but when they do they’re usually not the most beautiful things.

Sure there are some nice winter coats and boots, and sweaters are always a plus…but we’re talking about those big, bulky snow boots, and more controversially, tights.

We spotted sheer black nylons on a story in this seasons Porter magazine focusing on the sequin minidress numbers that are popping up. Which is what lead us to the issue.

Tights, nylons, whatever you call refer to them as, aren’t universally accepted as a “Do” in the style world. Are they really that warm? Do they make legs look stumpy? Are they too childish? Too mature? Are patterns good or bad? There’s no real clear direction.

Some say to skip them all together. If you’re going to wear a dress or a skirt, commit to it and deal with the cold or wear tall boots. Tights are viewed as matronly, making them frowned upon generally.  Others think that having the extra layer on your legs makes all the difference.

We usually see them in opaque black, which kind of camouflages tights as leggings without the extra bulk and with the added bonus of another layer on our feet. But when it comes to colours, patterns, and varying levels of opacity, we enter into uncharted territory. While those brightly coloured nylons might work for the quirky and adventurous, they make the skin crawl on those who live in all black. Patterns are considerably less offensive, but again, how far is too far? With each addition of an element to the tights there is another element to consider for the outfit as a whole.

We’re chalking it up to personal style entirely. If nylons make sense in your wardrobe, with your style, and your likings, than by all means shop that mysterious (and sometimes complicated) department store section. If not, stick to wearing them under pants for insulation when it’s just way too cold to deal.

All in all, go with whatever seems like the right choice for you.
