Turtlenecks and I have had, what I would confidently label, a rocky past.

It might seem strange, but lots of people have clothing items they would prefer to not wear ever. Whether it be caused by plain dislike or a traumatic sartorial experience (shout out to the terrible Holiday turtleneck of my childhood), there is no getting past these clothing phobias.

Ever since I can remember, I have disliked turtlenecks, tight scarves, choker necklaces…you get the picture. The thought of having to wear something hugging my neck all day was the worst possible scenario I could imagine. I’d rather just be cold, thank you very much.

It has only been recently that I’ve decided to give the high neck another try. So you can imagine the shock I went through when I discovered that turtlenecks maybe aren’t the actual worst things ever. We’re talking a full 180 in the relationship.

Once my eyes had been opened to the light that is a cozy oversize knit turtleneck, there was no going back. From there I found sleeveless turtlenecks, which are great let me tell you, and even started to rely on them as a go-to. The truly big moment, however, was when I voluntarily purchased a regular old cotton turtleneck. The kind that used to conjure up feelings of hatred.

To my surprise, turtlenecks won’t prevent you from breathing, won’t cause a panic attack, and are actually kind of nice.

Take it as a sign that once in a while we should revisit things that we’ve sworn off wearing. Test the waters, see if something’s changed.

You never know where you might find your next obsession.
