NYC Newbie

NYC Newbie

Written by The Strategy

As you may know from posts and Instagrams and tweets and such, The Strategy was recently in New York at a very convenient time—Fashion Week. It’s not every day that we get to go on such an excursion, so as you can imagine it was all very exciting.

Going to New York is understandably alluring to everyone. It’s a mystical, magical place that never seems real until you actually get there and see it for yourself. Much of our time there felt like that. I was like a five year old kid in Disney World for the first time. You hear about cities having a personality, an energy, that is unique and vibrant. About how a place seems alive in it’s own right, separate from the people who live there. A more true statement couldn’t be said about New York City.

Though this wasn’t my first New York rodeo, it was my first Fashion Week run around. Seeing the city through new, fashion-y eyes was fascinating. Hopping in and out of taxis, things were pointed out to me left and right. The street where Anna WIntour lives, the Glossier offices, Chuck Bass’ Empire. In the midst of all the important city sights was the centre of our raison d’être, Madison Square Garden. The Mecca of New York Fashion Week. Post Yeezy, the area was buzzing and bursting with people. Even on a cold drizzly day, the stylish crop of show goers couldn’t be kept down. Something to be said of Fashion Week’s loyal patrons.

Walking around the famed department stores, the grandiose of New York’s style was impressive and addictive and even a little dangerous. Not only did all the clothing look beautiful, they had prices of an equally stunning manner. In the midst of $7,000 scarves and $5,000 pants, $700 cotton tank tops were starting to look reasonable. Rather than indulging in what would certainly be an investment purchase, I made the choice to wander Barney’s in the same way I would an interactive museum. And while it would have been nice to have a souvenir from the day, absorbing the mere atmosphere of the department stores was more than enough to drum up some inspiration. It’s one thing to see the clothes online, but a whole other to see them in their natural habitat.

Easily taking the NYFW cake was our behind the scenes look into the world of buyers and showrooms. Jill Heller, who not only has a lifestyle that is so concise and centred, but manages to be a wonderful host and a never ending fountain of knowledge, allowed us the privilege of following her around on buying appointments. You could say I was geeking out, but that would be a vast understatement. It was enthralling.

Dining at unique restaurants, shopping in beautiful stores, and a sighting of the beautiful Miss J Alexander wrapped up our few days in New York. They were short and sweet, but New York was as memorable as ever.

Until next time, NYC.
