Emily Perlstein

Bio

We recently let you in on what inspires Alana Hadid’s style. Now, we’d like to introduce you to Emily Perlstein, the other half of the La Detresse denim line.  The New York native, and now Los Angeles resident is the perfect example of when East Coast style meets West Coast style. She’s a former personal shopper, and current stylist, Co-Founder and designer…if that’s not too many hats to wear.

Q&A

How do you start your day off?

Pressing the snooze button! Then, I go through all my e-mails, check Instagram and stumble out of bed to the kitchen to make coffee. I am so not a morning person! It’s a goal of mine to change. I honestly hate the mornings more than anything.

What’s going on in the background when you are getting ready?

TV and probably a phone call with either my mom or dad. They’re in New York, and there’s the three hour time difference, so the morning is when I catch them. Or, I’m on the phone with Alana checking in with what’s going on. If I’m watching TV, I’m either watching The Today Show (I grew up with it), or CNN.

You never leave home without…

My cell phone and my planner. I am really old school and I write everything down, because I don’t trust my phone. More than my phone, if I don’t have my planner on me, I feel completely naked.

What are your closet essentials?

A really good pair of jeans! I’m a big jeans and t-shirt person. It’s something I adapted to when I moved to LA. A leather jacket, for sure; It’s my ‘throw on’ with anything. A La Detresse denim jacket, and a good pair of slides. I never was into sneakers, but slides are my thing that I slip on a go.

What is your biggest fashion regret?

When I was in 9th grade, those terry cloth, baby doll, Juicy Couture cover-ups that were scrunchie on the top. I have a bunch of pictures of myself in them, and I cringe when I see them! Also, all the Tiffany jewelry that I wanted. My mom would tell me there was nicer jewelry out there, but I thought there was nothing nicer than Tiffany’s! And now, I only regret all of it.

You always splurge on, and you always save on…

I splurge on shoes, bags and outerwear. I save on denim, and vintage t-shirts.

What is one piece of clothing you wish you could steal from your 16 year old self?

I had a bunch of really dope crop tops that are totally back now, and I would 100% rock those today. There were cap sleeve ones that were super tight and short. I love a good crop top with a high waisted pant.

What inspires your style most?

Comfort, because I am running around so much! Also, I really get into these internet k-holes, where I’m following Tumblrs, and looking up blogs. They motivate me when I’m in a clothing rut to get out and put myself together and be on trend.

Your #1 style tip is…

Know your body and know what looks good on your body. Ignore trends that don’t work for your body type. And invest in classic pieces.
