The Silk Pillowcase

The Silk Pillowcase

Written by Natasha Lawrence

I first heard about the magic of a silk pillowcase when I was in my early twenties. As a girl who struggled with a head full of thick curly hair, the idea seemed too good to be true, and I wasn’t about to blow my hard earn pay check on an experiment. Fast forward some years, and the magic of a silk pillowcase has yet to die down, and I am finally in a position where splurging on a silk pillowcase that may or may not solve my curly-headed woes, is not so crazy. Naturally, I had to see for myself if the hype was all true.

Silk pillowcases have a number of benefits over cotton, but the basis of them all is that the silk allows your hair and skin move smoothly along the fabric without sucking all the moisture.

Benefits for Hair

Your current pillowcase may feel soft and smooth, but in reality, tossing and turning throughout the night causes friction. This in turn damages your hair follicles, which results in dreaded frizz and a dull appearance. Cotton also absorbs moisture.

Silk allows the hair to slide around smoothly on the pillowcase, resulting in less breakage.

Benefits for Skin

Silk is not only natural, it is also hypoallergenic. This means that it’s gentler on your skin. Again, as I said before, where cotton absorbs moisture, silk does not. Therefore, it doesn’t draw the moisture out of your skin as you sleep. And, like cotton does with your hair, it increases friction, which can lead to wrinkles. The soft silk fabric potentially prevents this from happening.

The Verdict

I’ve been using my Slip Silk Pillowcase for about a week. In that week, I’ve slept with a fresh blowout, wet hair, straight hair, and my natural curly hair. The silk pillowcase kept my blowout looking fresh the next morning, my wet hair less frizzy and with no tangles, straight hair impossibly smooth and my natural curly hair a little less frizzy. All big wins in my book. I still remember the first morning I woke up after using the new pillowcase. My tangle prone hair is normally a ball of knots when I wake up, but this time, I was genuinely surprised when I ran my brush through a completely tangle free head of hair.

With regards to my skin, while I didn’t notice any wrinkle related differences, I did notice that I woke up completely crease free. Throughout the night too, I never struggled to find “the cool side” of the pillow. The whole pillow was cool and comforting to my face during these hot summer nights.
