We first met Bobby Schuessler outside of the Beverly Hills Hotel after a fabulous dinner thrown by our favourite jewellers at The Last Line. The then LA-based editor was quite easily the best dressed guest at the event. Naturally we had to talk to him. As a writer and editor, Bobby has worked for and contributed to Refintery29, Out, Barneys New York, and Gilt. Currently, he’s the Senior Market Editor at Who What Wear, where he was also the website’s first male fashion editor. If you’re not already following his Instagram account, you’re missing out. Meet Bobby Schuessler.
How do you start your day off?
I know this is a huge “don’t,” but I check Instagram for about 10 minutes the second I get up. Oops! After that, I start getting ready for work. My getting-ready routine is pretty seamless, so it takes about 25 minutes in total with a shower. Then, I have a quick breakfast (usually a hard-boiled egg and a banana), catch up on my phone one more time (last-minute e-mails fro the evening before), and head out for the day.
What’s going on in the background when you are getting ready?
I usually have the TV on in the background. I’m a huge Bravo and E! fan (shocker, I know), so reruns of Keeping Up With The Kardashians or a Housewives franchise is usually blasting.
You never leave home without…
My cell phone (that’s obvious). I have a bag addiction, so I guess I’d say a great bag to complete my outfit.
What are your closet essentials?
I’ve basically developed a uniform over the years, and am known for always (always!) wearing all-black. So my outfit essentials would be a black leather jacket (I have a collection), a black top (turtleneck or cashmere crewneck if it’s cold, and a T-shirt if it’s warmer), black jeans (my favourite are by Paige), black ankle boots (Saint Laurent or The Koopes), or slides (usually Gucci), sunglasses (loving the new collection from The Arrivals), an Hérmes cuff (from my mother), and some sort of bag.
What is your biggest fashion regret?
I like to think that I don’t live with regrets, but my phase of wearing XXS Armani Exchange t-shirts was, let’s just say, special.
You always splurge on, and you always save on…
I always splurge on accessories. Because let’s be real, the perfect extras can make or break your outfit. To that, it’s handbags in particular that I always splurge on. I’m one of those fashion people that likes to go all in on one dream bag per season, wear it to death, and then recycle it a few seasons later. I’m all about my Balenciaga mini bag this season (which I got on Gilt). My brother also gave me a Gucci crossbody I wear to death.
What is one piece of clothing you wish you could steal from your 16 year old self?
I had a huge collection of puffer jackets in high school. Given that the trend is back in a major way, I’d love to go back in time and save some of the vibrant iterations I had when I was 16.
What inspires your style most?
While I turn to street style and designers for inspiration, I tend to stick to trends that compliment my personal style. I’ve grown to understand my self (and style) over the years, so it’s less about taking inspo from others, and more about embracing what I love from the start.
You’re Number 1 style tip is…
Wear whatever you love – and not necessarily what everyone else is wearing.
