My Style Story

My Style Story

Written by The Strategy

As we find ourselves in the middle of yet another fashion month, we thought we’d take a walk down memory lane with some TS Alum to find out what their first memory of fashion was.

It’s the moment that started it all…

“I was maybe 12 and everyone was wearing flared jeans. I didn’t get a lot of new clothes, because we couldn’t afford it, so I created my own pair. My brother helped me cut up a pair of denim, and we cut out a piece from another pair, and then I sewed them together to make your own pair of flares. That’s my first memory of fashion.”

“I remember sitting on my moms bed and always going through Vogue magazine.”

“I wore a uniform for most of my life, so being able to pick out my own clothes was always a big deal. I remember I was probably around 6 or 7, and I had changed out the laces on my Keds, so one was green and one was purple, and I wanted them to be mismatched. I then went and did it to all my sneakers. It was a very self-possessed decision. I was very obsessed with me picking things for myself.”“TV presenting really made me enjoy thinking about what I was going to wear on camera. I think I was at a fashion show when I was 13 and really loved it. I think my whole life really, I’ve enjoyed expressing myself through what I wear, and I’ve really enjoyed that process of deciding what to wear every morning. I love looking at the colours and putting everything together.”

“Basically, when I was a baby, I was modelling. My grandmother was obsessed with photos, which I hated at the time; now, I love it. She put me in modelling. I remember I was doing a special shoot for Armani Kids at 4 or 5 years old. I was saying to everyone, “I want to wear my hair like this, and I want to wear it like that, and Giorgio, I was want to wear that…” It was when I realized I want to be the one who decided. I said to my mum, either I want to be a designer like Giorgio, or the editor who ran the show.”

“The first time I really got into it was when I realized there were books on Cartier and Bulgari and Van Cleef & Arpels – when I was first able to find the JAR books when I was in my 20s. When I realized those things existed, all I would do was buy them and collect them.”
