Guess what day it is…

That’s right: National One Hit Wonder Day. What a glorious day it is!

In our time we have seen many, many, many One Hit Wonders float on by. Usually living up to their name of “One Hit Wonder,” they appear, they conquer, they move on. Occasionally though, there is One Hit that is so Wondrous it makes it’s way into your iTunes and stays there forever. We know this story all too well, and in keeping with the day, we have chosen our favourites along with some style grabs from each video that would totally work in the present day.

Come on Eileen- Dexys Midnight Runners

Probably the ultimate classic. Come on Eileen is the best song to put on blast while dancing around your house singing your lungs out. Denim overalls are the clear winner from the music video. Mainly because there isn’t much other wardrobe choices, but also because denim overalls are great.

I Want Candy- Bow Wow Wow

To be honest, we had never really seen the video for this until we went looking for it. It’s been overshadowed by another great, Aaron Carter. And though Aaron’s is good too, we have to say the original cannot be beat. There’s an intense guitarist with a mohawk, men buried up to their chins in sand, and candy canes? The lead singer is working the tank dresses though. We like the patterned one the best, but the draped one is a winner, too.

Who Let the Dogs Out- Baha Men

It’s hard to make a list of One Hit Wonders and not include this song. We have little to no idea what the actual words are, but the ones we do know we sing loud and proud. Style wise, it’s easy to get distracted by all the bikinis and Hawaiian print shirts, but if you look at the dancer in the red fringed ensemble, you will notice two minimalistic necklaces around her neck. While the song is great and the video is a sensory overload, the necklaces are the real stars.

Billy S.- Skye Sweetnam

A little less known than the previously listed One Hit Wonders, this wonder by Skye Sweetnam deserves recognition. The song inspires feelings of teen angst and rebellion, while the video basically defines the early 2000’s teen. Somewhere near the end we caught sight of a mini skirt, and since there is never not a time for a mini skirt, we have chosen this as the style staple. Bonus points for 2003 Mandy Moore.

Steal My Sunshine- Len

Does this one even need an explanation? Pretty sure Steal My Sunshine is played every single summer at least once, and is fully enjoyed and appreciated. Going unnoticed in the swarm of athletic wear, slim fitting maxi dresses, and the occasional pregnant woman, is a pair of lovely tortoise shell sunglasses. Completely functional and appropriate for everyday wear, then and now.

True- Spandau Ballet

Because Spandau Ballet, guys. Oversize blazers with massive shoulder pads were a hit which naturally translate to “Boyfriend Blazer” in the current day. Optional saxophone. Mandatory swaying to the music. Though we do wish to add that Gold will always be another Spandau Ballet song that has our hearts (and souls).
