Should I Buy?

Should I Buy?

Written by The Strategy

Let me set the scene:

You are out shopping. Not for anything in particular, just browsing. You’ve made your way into one of the many stores holding a sale. Scanning through a couple racks, a shirt catches your eye. There is $100 off the original price. Do you buy it? Or do you pass?

That is the question. It haunts us all during sale season, and even more when it’s unexpected. You’re drawn in by the price cut, more often than not, caving into it.

Is it really best to buy something purely because it is on sale? Sometimes.

You see, the sale section is usually where most people find hidden gems that have gone overlooked during their season. These hidden gems are what you should for sure snap up before anyone else does. However, setting yourself some guidelines prevents you from spending your money on something yo might wear once and then never look at again.

Guidelines such as not allowing yourself to purchase something on sale if it is damaged beyond repair. A missing button or a broken zipper can be remedied by a tailor. A hole, a ripped seam, or missing pieces cannot be solved so easily. Any damaged garment that is beyond the point of return is not worth buying. Put the dress with the shredded side seam down. Move on. Trust me.

Another crucial element to consider is if the sale item fits you properly. Even if there is 75% off plus an additional amount, no too-small pair of jeans is worth your stress and money. You will always find another of what it is you are debating on buying. It might take a little searching, but it’s out there somewhere. And in your size.

The absolute most important piece of the puzzle you must solve before deciding whether or not the sale item in question is worth it, is if you actually like it. Do you love this thing that you’ve found? I came across some advice once that said, “If you would have bought it for the regular price, you should buy on sale.” This can be true to a certain extent and is definitely helpful when making up your mind. If you are having doubts about it that keep popping up, making you uneasy, it’s best to keep shopping. If you really truly feel like the piece will be a valuable addition to your wardrobe, buy away.

Sales are a trying time. There’s a sense of competition between customers, between stores, and between articles of clothing. This or that? High price or low price? Yes or no?

Trust your instincts and be strong.
