There are no wardrobes I would rather raid, than those of Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen. Whether they’re carrying giant Hermès bags or sporting round frame Chanel sunnies, I want everything they have.
A few weeks ago, when looking back at some old Olsen photographs on Olsen’s Anonymous, I realized that most outfits they were wearing in 2007, I would still wear today. Ashley’s more classic looks are generally made up of wardrobe essentials, and Mary Kate’s more trendy looks feature iconic pieces that can be worn seasons over -ahem, one gorgeous Givenchy jacket from a 2007 collection that I would still kill to own.
I’ve pulled some of my favourite looks from over the years, and have decided to break them down into pieces you can still wear and purchase today.
Look #1 – Ashley Leaving a Salon in 2008
Maybe it’s the Canadian in me that’s loving this look so much, but I love this look of Ashley rocking a Canadian tuxedo in 2008.
I’ve updated this look with a Michael Michael Kors Washed Denim shirt, with Frame Denim skinny mid-rise jeans, Saint Laurent Oval sunglasses and ASOS Flick sandals.
Look #2 – Mary Kate Leaving a Restaurant in 2013
Ok, I’m not sure where I’m wearing this outfit to, but I love the combination of a silk skirt with Adidas slides. I live in my slides during the summer, and being able to wear them out into the evening and look as chic as MK is the goal.
I would make the ‘splurge’ of this outfit be a Nili Lotan skirt (a classic piece you will get tons of use out of), pairing it with a W118 by Walter Baker leather jacket, Equipment silk top, and of course, Adidas Adilette slides.
Look #3 – Ashley Out Shopping in 2007
Sadly, The Row bag that Ashley is wearing in this well put-together shopping outfit is sold out, but all is not lost! Have faith in the knowledge that you will always be able to get your hands on a striped shirt and Birkenstocks!
Seen here is an Iris & Ink top, The Row Sideby pebbled Calfskin Shoulder bag, J.Crew crop jeans and Birkenstock Gizeh sandals.
Look #4 – Mary Kate Celebrating the ‘Influence’ Book Launch at Barneys in 2008
It’s only Wednesday, but I’m ready to start planning my Friday night out, beginning with this look of Mary Kate’s from 2008. The understated jewelry and simple colour palette keep this look timeless, and as current in 2015 as it was in 2008.
My update involves a Maje Fringed mini-dress, Christian Louboutin So Kate pumps, Kenneth Jay Lane earrings and the Olsen’s signature Make Up Forever Aqua Lip Lip Pencil.
Look #5 – Ashley Out and About (date unknown)
My inability to find a date for this photo, proves to me that MK and A’s style is truly timeless. It could be as old as 2007 and as recent as 2014. The look is my go-to for Saturday morning errands and casual weekday afternoons.
I recreate this look with & Other Stories Acetate D-Frame sunglasses and ribbed v-neck top, Current/Elliot denim shorts and an ASOS biker jacket.
Look #6 – Mary Kate in a Messy Half Updo in 2008
The queen of undone hair, Mary Kate shows us all how a messy half updo should be done. Minimal effort. Minimal thinking.
To recreate, I suggest the use of Sephora hair ties, Bumble & Bumble Surf spray, for a natural texture, and ban.do bobby pins to hold in any layers you may have.
I hope this helps you get one step closer to becoming the missing Olsen twin…I mean triplet.
