Villoid is the latest and greatest fashion/style/shopping app to sweep the scene. The app was originally launched as SoBazaar about a year ago in Norway by mobile marketing/CEO/former lawyer extraordinaire Jeanette Dyhre Kvisvik. After some success, Villoid was released worldwide for all to try in late September. Fronted by Alexa Chung and backed by brands upon brands upon brands, how exactly does Villoid work?
Once you sign up, you’re sent an email from the company that has a link which signs you into the app (very exclusive, secret-door feeling). On the home page you have an overview of all the activity of the accounts you follow, both brands and users, as well as a few different navigation buttons that lead to everything you need.
The Discover button takes you to a feed of the most popular boards, users, brands, and products. This is also where you can do the majority of your searching, loving (a la Instagram’s liking), and following.
Create is the heart of Villoid. Here you can choose from a range of layouts to fill in with products that brands have added to the app. Essentially, you can create dream outfits that you and your followers can shop right on the app. Personal style and flair will take you far here, don’t hold back on all your crazy style ideas.
Activity shows a Cliff’s Notes version of the followers and loves you’ve been gaining, as well as an update on those you follow.
The last navigation button takes you to your profile where you can then access your boards, “love list”, and boards you’ve loved.
So what do we think?
Villoid, while sometimes glitchy, is kinda cool. Considering it’s still pretty new, we’re going easy on the fact that it sometimes crashes, there is no save option for boards you want to keep working on, or no edit option for boards that need some tweaking. The app might not be flawless, but it does have tons of users. The unanimous verdict seems to be that everyone loves Villoid, while being aware that it’s still relatively a baby.
Long story short: Villoid is a cool app with a cool idea that lots of people, from Alexa Chung and her inner circle, to everyday people are into. If you want the community aspect of Pinterest with a dash of Instagram’s social scene and creative control tossed on top, Villoid is the place to be.
